The Lineworker Certification Program (LCP) is recognized by the Dept. of Labor's Office of Apprenticeship (OA) and certain State Apprenticeship Agencies (SAA). SAAs exist in certain states that have opted to act as their own apprenticeship program registration authority. SAAs
function in a similar manner to the OA and both the OA and SAA
certifications are widely recognized in the power delivery industry. Click here to download an Office of Apprenticeship informational brochure on the benefits of registered apprenticeship for your business.
The LCP exceeds the OA and SAA requirement of 144 hours of related technical instruction (RTI) per year - each LCP module is worth 150 hours of training! Should your company wish to utilize the program as the RTI component of a power delivery apprenticeship program, your employees can earn nationally recognized certification - contact your OA or SAA representatives for more details and let them know that you want to use the LCP to meet the RTI requirements. If your company is already registered with the OA or SAA and you are considering using the LCP to augment or replace existing curriculum, the OA or SAA must be notified of the change. Usually the process to revise your apprenticeship agreement is fairly straightforward and easy - the LCP staff is also available for any assistance you may need.

Ensuring that the training leads to government certification requires the company to register their program with the OA or SAA. It is relatively easy to register an apprentice program. Your company will need to submit a simple application and draft a set of apprenticeship standards. Once the OA or SAA and your company agree upon the standards, apprentices may enroll and begin their formalized training with your company.
The OA and SAA can also make allowances for employees who have accumulated time in the trade, but have not been enrolled in a registered program. This is referred to as "granting advanced standing," and the apprentice can be awarded a predetermined number of hours toward their on-job training.
Question: How do my employees obtain their journeyman card once they have completed the program?
Answer: Once an employee finishes the Lineworker Certification Program, they will be issued a certificate of completion from Northwest Lineman College. A copy of this information is also sent to the employer for record keeping and OA or SAA certification purposes.
Question: My employees are currently enrolled in a registered apprentice program but we would like to switch over to the Lineworker Certification Program. How do program conversions work?
Answer: Companies or individuals who are interested in converting from another program are welcomed. Contact the OA or SAA representative for your state for more information.
