COURSES, COMPETENCIES, CERTIFICATIONS, and COMMERCIAL DRIVER'S LICENSE (CDL)

The ELP program is approximately 4 concurrent months (15 weeks) of full-time enrollment.   Students will participate in academic and field learning activities Monday through Thursday from 8:00AM to 4:30PM with a one-half-hour lunch break.  Each academic course consists of approximately 20 clock hours and includes a 6 hour lab project designed to reinforce the presented material.  Weekly exams are given on Thursdays in one hour blocks and final exams are given the last week of the program in two hour blocks.

The ELP program is 510 clock hours (55 minutes of instruction per clock hour), equivalent to 21.51 semester credits. The formula used to calculate the number of semester units is as follows:  One credit = 15 lecture hours, one credit = 30 laboratory hours.

Courses

ELPA 1202 - Electrical Systems

Discussion of the electrical system including generation, transmission, distribution, and metering; identify and describe the functions of various electrical apparatus.

ELPL 1202 – Electrical Systems Lab

Identification of off campus power system components.  Students will travel to predeternined locations in crews/groups and photograph and/or sketch overhead and underground system componenets then present findings to training specialist/class.

ELPA 1203 - Linework Fundamentals

Students will learn what employers expect regarding safety behavior and customer service.  This course will also teach safe working loads for rigging applications.

ELPL 1203 Linework Fundamentals Lab

Students will be exposed to various rigging configurations (lab station) that would require them to calculate actual strains and stresses applied to ropes and blocks using the formulas learned in the classroom.  Each student, with his/her crew, will have a total of 6 hours to visit each lab station.

ELPA 1204 - Basic Electrical Theory

Basic Electrical Theory will cover practical as well as theoretical applications of Direct Current (DC) and Alternating Current (AC) electricity.  The theoretical aspects will be related to the power system.

ELPL 1204 Basic Electrical Theory Lab

Students and crewmates will be placed in various situations that will require them to apply Ohm’s Law to the job site.  These situations will reinforce the various roles that Ohm’s Law plays pertaining to the operation and maintenance of the electrical systems.

ELPA 2205 - Working on Lines and Equipment

Discussion of both energized and de-energized methods of working on transmission and distribution power lines.  Live-line tools and equipment, clearance procedures (turning power lines off) and the theory and application of personal protective grounding is also thoroughly covered.

ELPL 2205 Working on Lines and Equipment Lab

Application of various subjects in a hands-on lab environment.  Subjects include, but are not limited to, fused disconnect operation, field testing rubber gloves, cleaning and testing distribution protective grounds, live-line tool identification, and underground clearance procedures.

ELPA 2206 - Transformers

Discussion of the operation of distribution transformers, including theory, primary and secondary connections of single phase transformers, and banking single phase transformers.  Identify system voltage, nameplate voltage ratings, and customer voltage needed to properly install transformers or a transformer bank.  Classroom/lab environment.

ELPA 1207 - Career Planning & Strategies

This course will help the student to identify various power companies and describe their structure, effectively establish contact with potential employers, create and submit a resume and cover letter, demonstrate how to effectively participate in an interview, and identify various employment opportunities and career paths.

ELPL 2220 Work Orders Lab

Students work in crews and complete work order construction projects on overhead and underground systems using construction specification books, job prints, and safety manuals.  Instructors act as project supervisors.
